The best time to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials in Northern Ontario is from late May through mid-June, after the risk of hard frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed enough for root establishment. A secondary planting window opens in early to mid-September, giving plants several weeks to establish roots before the ground freezes in November. Martin Services handles planting projects across Powassan, North Bay, Callander, and surrounding communities, selecting species proven in our Zone 3b to 4a climate.

The Spring Planting Window

In Northern Ontario, the last frost date typically falls between May 20 and June 5, depending on the specific location and the year. The Powassan and North Bay area generally sees its last hard frost around the Victoria Day long weekend. Planting before the last frost risks damage to tender new growth, especially on perennials and newly leafed-out shrubs. Once the frost risk passes, the window from late May through mid-June offers ideal conditions: warming soil, increasing daylight, consistent rainfall, and the entire growing season ahead for root development. This is the window we target for the majority of our planting projects.

Fall Planting Advantages

Early September through early October is the second-best planting window in Northern Ontario, and for certain plants — particularly trees and hardy shrubs — fall planting can actually produce better results than spring. Cooler air temperatures reduce transplant stress, while soil remains warm enough for root growth well into October. Trees and shrubs planted in fall spend the winter establishing root systems and are better prepared to push top growth the following spring. The key is timing: plants need at least four to six weeks before the ground freezes to develop enough root mass to survive winter. In our area, that means getting plants in the ground by mid-October at the latest.

What Martin Services Plants

Martin Services selects plant material that is suited to Northern Ontario conditions — cold-hardy, drought-tolerant once established, and resistant to the pests and diseases common in the Nipissing District. We plant shade trees, ornamental trees, evergreen and deciduous shrubs, hedging material, perennial gardens, and ground cover. With 35 years of experience, we know which species thrive in local soil conditions, which handle the freeze-thaw cycles, and which provide year-round interest in a climate with long winters.
