The best time to prune most trees in Northern Ontario is late winter to early spring — typically late February through early April — before buds break and new growth begins. Pruning during dormancy reduces stress on the tree, minimizes disease risk, and allows you to see the branch structure clearly without leaves obscuring the view. Martin Services provides professional tree pruning across Powassan, North Bay, Callander, and surrounding communities.

Why Dormant-Season Pruning Works Best

When trees are dormant, their energy is stored in the roots rather than actively flowing through branches. Pruning cuts made during this period heal faster once spring growth begins, and the risk of transmitting diseases like Dutch elm disease or oak wilt is significantly lower because the insects that carry these pathogens are not active in winter. In Northern Ontario, the dormant pruning window is longer than in Southern Ontario because our spring arrives later — giving you from late February through early April to get the work done before bud break.

Exceptions to the Rule

Some trees have specific pruning requirements. Spring-flowering ornamental trees like crabapple and lilac are best pruned immediately after they finish blooming, since they set next year's flower buds on this year's growth. Dead, damaged, or hazardous branches can and should be removed at any time of year for safety. Maples and birches are sometimes called "bleeders" because they drip sap heavily if pruned in late winter — while this does not harm the tree, it can be unsightly. Pruning these species in mid-summer after leaves have fully developed avoids the sap issue.
