Aeration removes small plugs of soil to relieve compaction and allow air, water, and nutrients to reach grass roots, while dethatching removes the layer of dead organic material — called thatch — that builds up between the grass blades and the soil surface. Both services improve lawn health, but they address different problems. Martin Services provides both aeration and dethatching across Powassan, North Bay, Callander, and surrounding communities, and we can tell you which one — or both — your lawn actually needs.

What Aeration Does

Core aeration uses a machine that pulls small cylindrical plugs of soil out of the ground, typically 2 to 3 inches deep. These holes allow oxygen to reach the root zone, improve water infiltration so rain and irrigation soak in instead of running off, and reduce soil compaction that restricts root growth. Compaction is the primary enemy of healthy lawns in Northern Ontario — foot traffic, mowing, and our heavy clay soils all contribute to compacted ground that chokes grass roots. Most lawns in the Powassan and North Bay area benefit from annual aeration, ideally in early fall when cool-season grasses are actively growing.

What Dethatching Does

Thatch is a layer of dead grass stems, roots, and organic debris that accumulates between the green grass blades and the soil surface. A thin layer (under half an inch) is actually beneficial — it insulates roots and retains moisture. But when thatch builds up beyond half an inch, it creates a barrier that prevents water, air, and fertilizer from reaching the soil. It also harbours insects and disease organisms. Dethatching uses a machine with vertical blades or tines that cut through and pull up the excess thatch layer, restoring the connection between your grass and the soil below.

Which Does Your Lawn Need?

Many Northern Ontario lawns need aeration annually, but not all lawns need dethatching. The best way to check for thatch is to cut a small wedge of lawn and measure the brown spongy layer between the green grass and the soil. If it is over half an inch, dethatching will help. If the soil feels hard and water pools on the surface rather than soaking in, aeration is needed. In many cases, both services together produce the best results — dethatch first to remove the barrier, then aerate to open up the soil below. Martin Services assesses each lawn individually and recommends only what will actually make a difference, backed by 35 years of experience with Northern Ontario turf.
