A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe designed to collect and redirect surface and subsurface water away from problem areas, while weeping tile is the perforated drainage pipe installed around the perimeter of a building's foundation to prevent basement water infiltration. The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they serve different purposes and are installed in different locations. Martin Services installs French drains and drainage solutions across Powassan, North Bay, and surrounding communities.

French Drains Explained

A French drain is a landscaping drainage solution. It consists of a trench filled with gravel or crushed stone, with a perforated pipe at the bottom wrapped in landscape fabric to prevent clogging. The trench is dug along the path where you want water to flow, sloped to direct water away from problem areas to a suitable discharge point. French drains are commonly used to solve soggy yards, redirect water away from patios or walkways, drain low spots that collect standing water, and manage runoff from slopes or neighbouring properties.

Weeping Tile Explained

Weeping tile is a drainage system installed at the base of a building's foundation, either on the exterior or interior. Its purpose is specifically to collect groundwater that builds up against the foundation walls and direct it to a sump pit or storm drain to prevent basement flooding and moisture damage. Exterior weeping tile is installed during construction or requires excavating around the foundation for retrofit installation. Interior weeping tile is installed inside the basement along the perimeter and channels water to a sump pump.

Which Do You Need?

If your problem is surface water pooling in the yard, soggy areas, or water flowing toward structures, a French drain is typically the right solution. If water is entering your basement through walls or the floor, weeping tile (combined with proper exterior grading) is usually needed. Many Northern Ontario properties benefit from both — French drains managing landscape drainage while weeping tile protects the foundation. Martin Services can assess your drainage situation and recommend the right solution.
