Most residential patio installations in Northern Ontario take 3 to 7 days from excavation to completion, depending on the size of the patio, materials chosen, site conditions, and complexity of the design. A straightforward 200-square-foot paver patio on relatively flat ground might be completed in 3 to 4 days. A larger patio with curves, multiple levels, built-in seating, or integration with retaining walls can take a full week or more. Martin Services installs patios across Powassan, North Bay, Callander, and surrounding communities.

The Installation Timeline

Day one is typically spent on layout, excavation, and hauling away existing soil or sod. This is where most of the heavy equipment work happens. Days two and three focus on building the base — laying and compacting gravel in lifts to create a solid, well-drained foundation. In Northern Ontario, the base is critical because our freeze-thaw cycles will destroy any patio built on an inadequate base. We typically install 8 to 12 inches of compacted Granular A depending on soil conditions. The final days are spent screeding the bedding sand layer, laying the pavers or stone in the chosen pattern, cutting border pieces, installing edge restraints, and sweeping polymeric sand into the joints.

What Can Extend the Timeline

Several factors can add time to a patio project. Poor soil conditions — like heavy clay, high water table, or buried debris — may require additional excavation and base material. Sloped sites need more grading and may require retaining walls or steps. Complex patterns like herringbone or circular designs take longer to lay than simple running bond patterns. Integrating features like fire pits, built-in seating walls, or lighting adds time but creates a more complete outdoor living space. Weather delays are always possible in Northern Ontario — we do not pour polymeric sand in the rain.

Planning Your Patio Project

The best time to install a patio in Northern Ontario is June through September when ground conditions are ideal. Popular timeslots fill up quickly, so booking early is important. Martin Services will visit your property for a free consultation, discuss design options, provide a detailed quote, and give you a realistic timeline for your specific project. With 35 years of experience building patios across the Nipissing District, we know how to manage projects efficiently while never cutting corners on the base work that determines how long your patio will last.
