The ultimate height of a privacy hedge depends entirely on the species planted, with options ranging from compact 4-foot formal hedges to towering 20-foot-plus evergreen screens. The most popular privacy hedge in the Powassan, North Bay, and Northern Ontario area — Eastern white cedar — typically reaches 10 to 15 feet when maintained as a hedge, though left untrimmed it can grow much taller. Martin Services helps clients select the right hedge species to achieve their desired height and privacy level while considering site conditions, maintenance commitment, and growth rate.

Popular Privacy Hedge Heights

Eastern white cedar hedges, the most commonly planted privacy screen in our area, grow to a maintained height of 8 to 12 feet for most residential applications, though they can be kept shorter or allowed to grow taller. White spruce hedges can reach 15 to 20 feet or more when given adequate space and will naturally fill in to create a dense visual and wind barrier. Colorado spruce provides similar height with a more formal, uniform appearance. For lower privacy screening — around four to six feet — options include ninebark, alpine currant, and dogwood hedges that provide three-season screening with a more compact growth habit.

Growth Rates in Northern Ontario

Growth rates for privacy hedges in the Powassan and North Bay area are slower than what you will see quoted in Southern Ontario or American gardening references. Our shorter growing season — roughly mid-May to mid-October — means hedges put on growth for about five months compared to seven or eight months in milder climates. Eastern white cedar typically grows 6 to 12 inches per year in our area. White spruce grows 12 to 18 inches annually under good conditions. Faster-growing options like hybrid poplar can add three feet or more per year but produce a less dense screen and have a shorter lifespan. Martin Services sets realistic growth expectations for every client so you know exactly when your hedge will reach the desired height.

Managing Hedge Height

Once a hedge reaches your desired height, annual trimming keeps it at that level. Cedar and spruce hedges respond well to height control through regular top trimming, as long as you maintain green growth below the cut line. One important consideration: it is much easier to maintain a hedge at a moderate height (8 to 10 feet) than to keep trimming a species that naturally wants to be 20 feet tall. Martin Services recommends selecting a species whose natural mature height is close to your target, rather than fighting against a plant's genetics with aggressive trimming. With 35 years of experience planting hedges across the Nipissing District, we match the right species to each client's privacy goals and property conditions.
