Maintaining a stone patio requires regular sweeping, occasional polymeric sand top-ups, annual cleaning, and prompt attention to any shifting or settling pavers. A well-built stone patio is one of the lowest-maintenance outdoor features you can add to your property, but it does need some regular attention to stay level, clean, and weed-free. The good news is that patio maintenance is straightforward and does not require specialized skills or equipment. Martin Services builds and maintains stone patios across Powassan, North Bay, and surrounding areas, and we help our clients understand how to keep their investment looking great for decades.
Regular Patio Maintenance Tasks
The most important routine maintenance is keeping the joints filled with polymeric sand. This specially formulated sand hardens when wet, locking pavers in place and preventing weed growth between stones. Over time, polymeric sand can erode from heavy rain, power washing, or freeze-thaw cycles. Inspect your patio joints each spring and top up any areas where the sand has washed out or settled. Regular sweeping removes leaves, dirt, and debris that can trap moisture and promote moss or algae growth. For general cleaning, a garden hose and stiff broom handle most situations. For tougher stains or algae buildup, a pressure washer on a moderate setting works well — just avoid using maximum pressure directly on the joint sand, as this can blast it out.
Seasonal Patio Care in Northern Ontario
Northern Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles are the biggest challenge for stone patios. Water that seeps under pavers can freeze and expand, pushing individual stones up and creating uneven surfaces. Keeping joints properly filled with polymeric sand is your first line of defence, as it prevents water from penetrating below the surface. If you notice any pavers that have heaved or settled after winter, address them early — a single shifted paver can allow water under adjacent stones, causing the problem to spread. Martin Services can re-level and re-set shifted pavers as part of a spring maintenance visit. With 35 years of experience building patios in Northern Ontario, we install proper gravel bases, compaction, and drainage that minimize heaving, but some movement is inevitable in our climate and should be addressed promptly.
