Privacy hedges in Northern Ontario need annual trimming to maintain shape and density, occasional fertilization to support healthy growth, watering during establishment, and winter protection in areas with deer pressure. The maintenance commitment varies by species — cedar hedges need one trim per year, faster-growing deciduous hedges may need two, and all hedges benefit from monitoring for pest and disease issues. Martin Services provides hedge maintenance across Powassan, North Bay, and surrounding communities for both hedges we have planted and existing hedges that need professional care.

Annual Trimming

Trimming is the most important maintenance task for privacy hedges. Without regular trimming, hedges grow wider at the top than the bottom, which shades out lower branches and creates a thin, bare base over time. Proper trimming maintains a slight taper — wider at the bottom, narrower at the top — that allows light to reach all parts of the hedge evenly. Cedar hedges in Northern Ontario should be trimmed once per year, typically in late June or July during the active growing season. Faster-growing species like privet or dogwood may benefit from a second light trim in late August. Martin Services uses proper trimming technique to maintain hedge density from ground level to the top.

Watering and Fertilization

Newly planted hedges need consistent watering through their first two growing seasons until root systems are established. In the Powassan and North Bay area, this means supplemental watering during dry stretches in June through August — newly planted cedars and spruce are particularly vulnerable to drought stress during their first summer. Established hedges generally do not need supplemental watering in Northern Ontario except during extended dry periods. An annual application of balanced fertilizer in late spring promotes healthy growth without encouraging the excessive growth that requires more frequent trimming. Martin Services recommends a slow-release granular fertilizer applied at the drip line of the hedge.

Winter Protection

In areas with deer activity — and much of the Powassan, North Bay, and Nipissing District area has significant deer populations — winter protection for cedar hedges is strongly recommended. Burlap wrap or deer netting applied before the first snow prevents browse damage that can permanently disfigure or kill cedar hedges. Spruce and most deciduous hedges are less palatable to deer and generally do not need winter protection. Heavy snow loads can also spread or break hedge branches; brushing snow off after heavy snowfalls prevents permanent damage to the hedge structure.

Monitoring for Problems

Martin Services monitors hedges during maintenance visits for common issues: browning sections that indicate root stress or disease, bagworm infestations on cedar and spruce, spider mite damage during hot dry weather, and winter injury that appears as brown or dead areas in spring. Catching these problems early allows targeted treatment before they spread. With 35 years of experience maintaining hedges across the Nipissing District, our crew recognizes the early signs of common hedge problems and addresses them before they become serious.
