Yes, Martin Services sorts and recycles demolition materials including scrap metal, concrete, clean wood, and other salvageable materials whenever possible. Responsible waste management is part of how we operate. Recycling reduces landfill volume, lowers disposal costs, and is simply the right thing to do. We apply this approach to every demolition and structure removal project across Powassan, North Bay, and surrounding communities.
What Gets Recycled
Metal is the most commonly recycled demolition material — steel beams, aluminum siding, copper wiring and plumbing, iron fixtures, and other metal components are separated and sent to metal recyclers. Concrete and masonry can be crushed and reused as aggregate for road base or fill material. Clean dimensional lumber that is not painted, treated, or contaminated can be repurposed or directed to wood recycling programs. Appliances, fixtures, and hardware with remaining useful life may be salvaged for reuse.
What Cannot Be Recycled
Some demolition materials cannot be recycled and must go to licensed disposal facilities. These include asbestos-containing materials, treated lumber (CCA-treated wood contains arsenic and chromium), contaminated soil, mixed waste that cannot be effectively sorted, and materials containing hazardous substances like lead paint. Martin Services identifies these materials during the project assessment and handles them according to Ontario environmental regulations.
Our Approach
Martin Services builds recycling into our demolition process from the start. During the teardown, materials are sorted on site rather than mixed together. This takes slightly more time during demolition but significantly increases the amount we can divert from the landfill. We track local recycling options in the Nipissing District and maintain relationships with recyclers and salvage operations. When clients ask, we can provide information about what was recycled and diverted on their specific project.
