Martin Services handles both large overgrown hedge restoration and regular maintenance trimming across Powassan, North Bay, and surrounding areas. Whether your hedges need a light shaping or a major renovation, Martin Services has the equipment and expertise to handle it. Many property owners inherit overgrown hedges when they purchase a home, or hedges that were neglected for a few years can quickly grow well beyond their intended size and shape. Our crews handle everything from gentle annual maintenance trims to aggressive renovation cuts that bring overgrown hedges back to a manageable size.
Overgrown Hedge Restoration
Restoring an overgrown hedge requires a different approach than routine maintenance trimming. For most hedge species common in the North Bay area, including cedar, lilac, privet, and dogwood, we can perform significant size reduction over one or two seasons. The key is understanding how each species responds to hard pruning. Deciduous hedges like lilac and dogwood are generally very tolerant of aggressive cutting and can be reduced by half or more in a single session — they respond by sending out vigorous new growth from old wood. Cedar hedges are less forgiving — cutting back into old brown wood usually will not regenerate, so cedar renovation must be done more gradually, taking the hedge back in stages over two or three years to maintain green foliage on the exterior while slowly reducing overall size.
Regular Maintenance Trimming
For hedges that are already at the desired size and shape, Martin Services provides scheduled maintenance trimming to keep them looking neat and healthy. Most hedges in Northern Ontario benefit from one to three trims per season, depending on the species and growth rate. Fast-growing species like willow or dogwood may need trimming every four to six weeks during peak growth, while slower-growing cedars typically need just one or two trims per year. Our crews use professional-grade hedge trimmers and hand pruners to create clean, even surfaces and maintain the natural form of the hedge. With 35 years of experience, we know the growth habits and pruning requirements of every common hedge species in the Nipissing District.
