Martin Services prunes small to medium trees up to approximately 30 feet tall, including ornamental trees, fruit trees, shade trees, and overgrown shrubs that have grown into tree form. For trees that require climbing, bucket trucks, or are near power lines, we recommend a certified arborist with specialized equipment. Our tree pruning services cover the vast majority of residential trees across Powassan, North Bay, Callander, and surrounding communities.

Types of Trees We Prune

Most residential trees in Northern Ontario fall within our pruning range. We regularly prune apple and crabapple trees, ornamental maples, birch, mountain ash, lilac trees, cedar, and various ornamental species common in the Nipissing District. Our crew handles structural pruning on young trees to establish good form, maintenance pruning on mature trees to remove dead, crossing, or damaged branches, and rejuvenation pruning on overgrown specimens that need to be brought back into shape. We also prune hedges and large shrubs that have outgrown their space.

When to Prune in Northern Ontario

Timing matters for tree pruning in our climate. Most deciduous trees are best pruned in late winter or early spring while still dormant — typically February through early April in the Powassan and North Bay area. Pruning during dormancy reduces disease transmission risk, allows you to see the branch structure clearly, and gives the tree a full growing season to heal. Spring-flowering trees like crabapple should be pruned right after blooming. We avoid pruning most species during active growth in June and July, and we never prune oaks during the warm months due to oak wilt risk.

What We Do Not Handle

Martin Services does not do high-risk tree work — that means no climbing with chainsaws, no trees tangled in power lines, no large removals requiring cranes or rigging, and no trees over 30 feet that need canopy work. We are transparent about our scope because safety matters. If your tree needs a certified arborist, we will tell you. With 35 years of experience, we know exactly where the line is between good pruning practice and work that requires specialized arborist equipment and certification.
