Mulch does more than look good — it's one of the hardest-working materials in your landscape. A proper 2-3 inch layer suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture through Northern Ontario's hot summers, insulates plant roots during our harsh freeze-thaw cycles, and breaks down over time to feed the soil with organic matter. It's also one of the fastest ways to transform the look of your entire property — fresh mulch makes everything around it look better.

Signs Your Garden Beds Need Fresh Mulch

Mulch breaks down over time — especially in Northern Ontario's climate. Here's how to tell when it's time for a refresh.

Faded & Decomposed Mulch

Old mulch turns grey, breaks into fine particles, and loses its colour. When it looks more like dirt than mulch, it's no longer doing its job effectively.

Weeds Breaking Through

When mulch thins below 2 inches, weed seeds get enough light to germinate. If you're pulling weeds from your beds constantly, it's time for a fresh layer.

Exposed Soil

Bare soil in garden beds means moisture loss, temperature extremes at the root zone, and erosion during heavy rain — all problems a proper mulch layer prevents.

Tree Roots Showing

Exposed tree roots are vulnerable to mower damage, temperature stress, and drying out. A proper mulch ring protects roots and keeps trees healthier.

How We Handle Mulching Jobs

1

On-Site Consultation

We assess your garden beds, measure square footage, discuss mulch type preferences, and provide a detailed quote including material and labour.

2

Bed Assessment & Prep

We evaluate existing mulch condition, soil health, and drainage. Beds that need significant prep get noted before we start.

3

Weed Removal & Edge Cleanup

All weeds are pulled or cut. Bed edges are cleaned and re-defined for a crisp, professional look before any mulch goes down.

4

Soil Amendment

Where needed, we add compost or soil conditioner to improve drainage and fertility before the mulch layer goes on top.

Mulch Delivery

Premium mulch is delivered in bulk and staged for efficient spreading. We source locally whenever possible for freshness and quality.

6

Mulch Spreading

Applied at a consistent 2-3 inch depth, keeping mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks. No volcano mulching — ever.

7

Final Cleanup

All walkways, driveways, and lawn edges are swept clean. We leave your property looking better than when we arrived.

Mulch & Ground Cover Types We Install

We carry a range of organic and inorganic ground cover options. We'll help you choose the right material for your specific beds, budget, and goals.

Cedar Bark Mulch

Our most popular choice. Naturally insect-resistant, slow to decompose, and holds its rich colour for 2-3 years. Ideal for garden beds, foundation plantings, and tree rings.

Hardwood Bark Mulch

A cost-effective option that breaks down faster than cedar, enriching the soil with organic matter as it decomposes. Great for large-area coverage and vegetable gardens.

Pine Bark Nuggets

Larger chunks that stay in place well on slopes and resist washing away in heavy rain. Slightly acidic — excellent around acid-loving plants like blueberries and rhododendrons.

Colored Mulch

Available in black, brown, and red. Holds colour longer than natural mulch. We recommend natural options first, but coloured mulch works for decorative applications.

River Stone & Pea Gravel

Permanent ground cover that never decomposes. Best for drainage areas, around foundations, walkway borders, and anywhere you want zero-maintenance coverage.

Landscape Fabric + Mulch

For beds with severe weed problems, we install commercial-grade landscape fabric beneath the mulch layer for maximum weed suppression while still allowing water through.

When to Mulch in Northern Ontario

Timing matters with mulch. Apply too early in spring and you trap cold, wet soil that delays root warming and plant growth. Apply too late and weeds get a head start. The sweet spot in the Powassan and North Bay area is typically late May to mid-June — after the ground has fully thawed and your spring cleanup is complete.

Fall mulching (late October) is also valuable as an insulation layer to protect perennial roots through winter. For properties in Sturgeon Falls, Corbeil, West Ferris, and Bonfield, we schedule mulching during these optimal windows for the best results.

Mulching Schedule at a Glance

  • Late spring (May–Jun) — Primary mulching season after ground thaw
  • Late fall (Oct) — Winter insulation mulch for perennial beds
  • Refresh cycle — Every 1-2 years for organic mulch
  • Stone ground cover — One-time installation, lasts indefinitely
We recommend pairing mulching with our garden bed edging service for the cleanest possible result. Sharp edges make fresh mulch look even better.

Mulching FAQs

Got questions about mulching? Here are the ones we hear most. Can't find your answer? Call us at (249) 506-9211.

How often should I re-mulch my garden beds?

In Northern Ontario, organic mulch should be refreshed every 1-2 years. Our freeze-thaw cycles break mulch down faster than milder climates. When mulch looks faded, has thinned below 2 inches, or weeds are pushing through, it's time. Call (249) 506-9211 to schedule.

What's better — cedar or hardwood mulch?

Cedar lasts longer (2-3 years vs 1-2), naturally repels insects, and resists rot. Hardwood is cheaper and breaks down faster, which builds soil organic matter. Cedar is our top recommendation for most beds. Hardwood works well for budget-conscious large-area coverage.

How deep should mulch be applied?

We apply mulch at 2-3 inches deep. Less than 2 inches won't suppress weeds. More than 4 inches suffocates roots. Around trees, we leave a 3-4 inch gap from the trunk — no volcano mulching. Proper depth is one of the most important details in a mulch job.

Should I use mulch or stone in my garden beds?

Organic mulch is better for plant beds — it improves soil, retains moisture, and insulates roots. Stone is better for drainage areas, pathways, and foundations where you want zero maintenance. Many properties use both. Call (249) 506-9211 for advice on your specific beds.

Is colored mulch safe for plants?

Most colored mulch uses iron-oxide or carbon-based dyes considered safe for soil. However, colored mulch is often made from recycled wood that may include treated lumber. We recommend natural cedar or hardwood for the best performance and peace of mind.

When is the best time to mulch?

Late spring (late May to mid-June) after the ground has fully thawed and spring cleanup is done. Mulching too early traps cold moisture and delays root warming. Fall mulching in late October also works well as winter root insulation. Call (249) 506-9211 to book.
