Martin Services designs and builds custom paver and natural stone patios for residential properties across Powassan, North Bay, Callander, Astorville, East Ferris, and surrounding communities in Northern Ontario. Whether you want a cozy flagstone sitting area off the back door or a full outdoor entertaining space with room for dining, a fire pit, and a hot tub — we handle the entire project from design to final sealing.

A patio built right becomes the centre of your outdoor living for decades. The key up here is the base — Northern Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles will destroy a patio that's been set on a few inches of sand. We excavate deep, build proper granular bases, compact in layers, and use only freeze-thaw rated products designed for Zone 4a/4b climates. That's the difference between a patio that shifts and cracks in two winters and one that looks great 25 years from now.

Signs It's Time for a New Patio

If any of these describe your current outdoor space, a properly built stone patio is the solution.

Cracked Concrete Slab

Frost heaving cracks concrete patio slabs every winter up here. Once it starts, it only gets worse — water enters the cracks, freezes, and splits them wider each season.

Poor Drainage & Pooling

Water pooling on or around your patio means the grading is wrong. Standing water creates ice patches in winter and breeds mosquitoes in summer.

Uneven Settling

Pavers or stones that have sunk, shifted, or become uneven create tripping hazards and look terrible. Usually means the original base wasn't deep enough.

Aging Wood Deck

Rotting, splintering, or sagging wood decks are expensive to maintain and a safety risk. A stone patio is a permanent, maintenance-free replacement.

How We Build Your Patio

1

Consultation & Site Visit

We visit your property, discuss your vision, assess soil and drainage conditions, and take measurements for an accurate quote.

2

Design & Layout

We help you choose materials, patterns, and layout — factoring in how you'll use the space, furniture placement, and connection to your home.

3

Excavation

We excavate 12-14 inches deep to create room for the granular base layers needed to prevent frost heaving in Northern Ontario soil.

4

Base Preparation & Compaction

Granular A base material is added in layers, each machine-compacted to create a rock-solid foundation that won't shift or settle.

5

Leveling Sand

A screeded layer of bedding sand provides the final leveling surface for precise stone or paver placement.

6

Stone & Paver Installation

Each stone or paver is set by hand according to your chosen pattern — herringbone, running bond, random flagstone, or custom designs.

7

Edge Restraints

Heavy-duty edge restraints are staked around the perimeter to prevent lateral shifting and keep your patio locked in place permanently.

8

Polymeric Sand & Sealing

Polymeric sand fills the joints to lock stones together and prevent weed growth. Optional sealing enhances colour and adds stain protection.

Patio Materials We Work With

We source quality products from trusted manufacturers and natural stone suppliers. Every material we use is rated for Northern Ontario's freeze-thaw conditions.

Natural Flagstone

Irregular, hand-selected pieces that create a classic, organic look. Available in Ontario limestone, granite, and local fieldstone varieties. Every patio is one of a kind.

Interlocking Pavers

Manufactured by Unilock, Permacon, and Techo-Bloc in dozens of colours, textures, and shapes. Uniform sizing makes patterns precise and replacement easy if needed.

Granite & Limestone

Cut natural stone slabs for a refined, upscale look. Extremely durable — granite especially handles heavy traffic and harsh weather without showing wear.

Slate & Custom Blends

Slate offers rich colour variation and a naturally textured surface. We also create custom blends mixing paver borders with natural stone centres for unique designs.

Planning Your Perfect Patio

A great patio starts with smart design. We consider how you'll actually use the space — dining, lounging, entertaining, fire pit, hot tub — and build a layout that flows naturally from your home to your yard.

For properties in Powassan, Callander, Sturgeon Falls, and throughout the North Bay region, we factor in sun exposure, prevailing winds, privacy from neighbours, and connection to existing landscaping. The goal is an outdoor space you'll use from May through October — not just a slab of stone in the backyard.

What We Consider in Every Design

  • Size & layout — Proportional to your home and how you'll use the space
  • Drainage grading — Water always directed away from your foundation
  • Access & flow — Walkway connections to house, yard, and driveway
  • Future features — Built-in provisions for fire pit, lighting, or hot tub
Every patio we build includes proper slope for drainage, edge restraints, and polymeric sand — these aren't extras, they're essential for longevity in our climate.

Patio Installation FAQs

Got questions about patio installation? Here are the ones we hear most. Can't find your answer? Call us at (249) 506-9211.

What's the difference between pavers and natural stone?

Interlocking pavers are manufactured concrete products with uniform shapes and consistent colours — brands like Unilock, Permacon, and Techo-Bloc. Natural stone (flagstone, granite, limestone) is quarried, giving each piece a unique look. Pavers are typically more affordable; natural stone costs more but offers a one-of-a-kind aesthetic. Both work great in our climate. Call (249) 506-9211 to discuss options. Read the full answer →

How much does a stone patio cost?

Interlocking paver patios generally start around $25-$35 per square foot installed. Natural stone ranges from $35-$60+ per square foot. A typical 200-square-foot patio runs between $5,000 and $12,000 including excavation, base preparation, materials, and finishing. Call (249) 506-9211 for a free estimate.

How long does patio installation take?

Most residential patios take 3-5 days from excavation to completion. Larger projects with custom patterns or built-in features may take a full week. Weather can affect the timeline — we need dry conditions for base compaction and polymeric sand application. We'll give you a clear timeline during consultation.

How do I maintain a stone patio?

Sweep regularly, rinse with a garden hose, and pull any weeds in joints. Every 3-5 years, re-apply polymeric sand and consider resealing. Avoid salt for winter ice — use sand instead. We offer maintenance services if you'd rather leave it to the pros.

Will a stone patio survive Northern Ontario winters?

Absolutely — proper installation is the key. We excavate 12-14 inches deep and build compacted granular base layers that prevent frost heaving. We use only freeze-thaw rated products and polymeric sand that stays flexible through temperature swings. A properly built patio lasts 25+ years in our climate.

Can a patio support a hot tub or heavy furniture?

Yes, with proper engineering. For hot tubs or other heavy loads, we increase the base depth and compaction. We'll factor this into the design during your consultation. We also install hot tubs and saunas if you're looking to add one.
