Martin Services designs and builds stone walkways and garden paths for residential properties across Powassan, North Bay, Callander, Astorville, East Ferris, and surrounding communities in Northern Ontario. A well-built walkway does more than connect point A to point B — it defines your property's character, improves safety, and eliminates muddy shortcuts across the lawn.

Whether you need a formal front entry walkway that makes a strong first impression, a winding garden path through your perennial beds, or stepping stones through a natural area — we handle the full project from routing and design through to final installation. Every walkway we build includes proper base preparation, drainage grading, and materials rated for Northern Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles.

Signs Your Property Needs a Proper Walkway

If any of these sound familiar, it's time to invest in a walkway that works year-round.

Muddy Paths & Worn Grass

Foot traffic has worn muddy trails across your lawn. Every spring thaw and rainstorm makes it worse — and it never recovers on its own.

Tripping Hazards

Uneven stones, cracked concrete, or tree roots have turned your existing path into a liability — especially dangerous for older visitors and children.

Eroded Walkways

Water runoff has washed away gravel paths or undercut existing walkway edges. Without proper drainage, erosion will keep winning.

Disconnected Garden Areas

Your garden beds, patio, shed, and other features have no clear connection. A path system ties your landscape together and makes it usable.

How We Build Your Walkway

1

Consultation & Path Routing

We walk your property together, discuss how you use the space, and map out the ideal path routing — considering traffic patterns, sight lines, and garden features.

2

Excavation

We excavate to the proper depth based on your material choice and soil conditions — typically 8-12 inches for a walkway that won't shift or heave.

3

Base Gravel & Compaction

Granular base material is added and machine-compacted in layers to create a stable foundation that drains properly and resists frost movement.

4

Leveling & Grading

Bedding sand is screeded level with a slight cross-slope to direct water off the walkway surface — no puddles, no ice patches.

5

Stone & Paver Setting

Each stone or paver is placed by hand to your chosen pattern — whether that's a formal running bond, casual flagstone, or natural stepping stones.

6

Edging & Gap Filling

Edge restraints lock everything in place. Joints are filled with polymeric sand (pavers) or planted with ground cover (flagstone) for a finished look.

7

Landscape Integration

We blend the walkway edges into your existing landscape — grading soil, adding mulch borders, and ensuring clean transitions to lawn, garden beds, or patio areas.

Walkway Materials We Work With

We match the right material to your style, budget, and how the walkway will be used. Every product we install is rated for Northern Ontario conditions.

Flagstone Stepping Stones

Natural, irregular-shaped stones set into lawn or ground cover for a casual, organic look. Perfect for garden paths and secondary walkways through natural areas.

Interlocking Pavers

Manufactured pavers from Unilock, Permacon, and Techo-Bloc. Uniform sizing, dozens of colour options, and easy to shovel in winter. Ideal for front entry walkways.

River Rock & Crushed Granite

Loose-fill pathways with natural appeal. River rock creates a dry creek bed effect; crushed granite packs firm for a walkable surface. Both drain beautifully.

Natural Fieldstone

Locally sourced fieldstone creates rustic, character-rich paths that blend naturally with Northern Ontario landscapes. Each piece is unique — no two paths look alike.

Walkway Styles for Every Property

The right walkway style depends on your home's architecture, your landscape, and how formal or casual you want the feel. We help you choose during the consultation — and we lay out the path on-site so you can see it before we dig.

For properties across Powassan, Callander, Astorville, and the North Bay area, we consider everything from sun exposure and drainage to snow removal access and connection to driveways, patios, and garden features.

Popular Walkway Styles

  • Formal front entry — Straight or gently curved paver walkway from driveway to front door
  • Garden path — Winding flagstone path through perennial beds and shade gardens
  • Stepping stones — Spaced stones through lawn or ground cover for a casual feel
  • Utility path — Functional connection to shed, garage, garden, or backyard
We can install low-voltage LED path lighting during walkway construction — much easier than retrofitting later. Ask about our garden lighting service.

Walkway & Path FAQs

Got questions about walkway installation? Here are the ones we hear most. Can't find your answer? Call us at (249) 506-9211.

What's better — flagstone or pavers?

Flagstone gives a natural, organic look and is great for garden paths. Pavers offer uniform appearance and are easier to shovel in winter — better for front entry walkways. Both hold up well in our climate when installed on a proper base. Call (249) 506-9211 to discuss your project.

How much does a walkway cost per linear foot?

A standard 3-4 foot wide paver walkway runs $40-$70 per linear foot installed. Flagstone ranges from $50-$90+ per linear foot. Stepping stone paths cost less. Prices include excavation, base prep, materials, and finishing. Call (249) 506-9211 for a free estimate.

Can you build curved walkways?

Absolutely — curved walkways often look better than straight ones. Flagstone is naturally suited to curves. Pavers can be cut to follow any curve. We lay out the path on-site so you can see and adjust the shape before we start excavating.

Can I add lighting to my walkway?

Yes, and we recommend it. Low-voltage LED path lights improve safety and look beautiful at night. We install conduit during construction so there's no need to dig later. Check out our garden lighting service.

How do you maintain walkways in winter?

Paver walkways can be shovelled and snow-blown easily. Flagstone walkways need a plastic shovel to avoid chipping. Avoid salt — it damages both pavers and natural stone. Use sand for traction instead. A properly built walkway with good drainage will shed water before it freezes, reducing ice buildup significantly.
