If you've ever driven through the Lake Nipissing corridor from Callander up through Powassan, you've seen cedar hedges everywhere. Eastern white cedar is the go-to privacy screen in Northern Ontario for good reason — it's hardy, dense, evergreen, and thrives in our Zone 4a/4b climate. But left untrimmed, cedars get leggy, sparse at the base, and lose the density that makes them useful in the first place. The same goes for lilac, dogwood, juniper, and every other shrub on your property. Regular, well-timed trimming is what keeps them looking full and healthy.

Why Trimming Timing Matters in Northern Ontario

Each species has a specific window for trimming. Miss it, and you risk winter damage, disease, or killing the plant. Here's what's at stake.

Cedar Winter Burn Risk

Trimming cedars after mid-August exposes fresh cuts to Northern Ontario's harsh winter winds and sub-zero temperatures. The result: brown, dead patches known as winter burn that take years to fill back in.

Species-Specific Timing

Spring-blooming shrubs like lilac should be trimmed right after flowering. Summer-blooming varieties need shaping in early spring before bud break. Cedar hedges have a mid-June to late-July sweet spot. Wrong timing means lost blooms or damaged growth.

Overgrown Hedge Renovation

Neglected hedges that haven't been touched in years need a phased approach — cutting back hard in stages over two seasons. Cedars don't regenerate from old brown wood, so one aggressive cut can cause permanent bare spots.

Base Thinning & Leggy Growth

Left untrimmed, cedars get leggy and sparse at the base, losing the density that makes them effective privacy screens. Regular trimming maintains fullness from top to bottom and keeps your property boundary looking solid.

Common Shrubs & Hedges We Maintain

Every species responds differently to trimming. Our crew knows the technique and timing for each one common to the North Bay region.

Eastern White Cedar

By far the most common hedge in the region. Trim mid-June through late July only. Cedars won't regenerate from old brown wood — cut too far into the interior and that section stays bare permanently. We maintain density from top to bottom.

Lilac & Dogwood

Vigorous growers that respond well to harder pruning. Lilacs are trimmed right after flowering to preserve next year's blooms. Red-osier and yellow-twig dogwood can handle a more aggressive cutback and will push new shoots from the base.

Juniper & Mugo Pine

Evergreen shrubs that hold their form well but need periodic shaping to stay compact. We also handle alpine currant, cotoneaster, burning bush, ninebark, potentilla, and spirea — all staples of Northern Ontario landscapes.

Ornamental Shrubs

Ornamental crabapple shrubs, saskatoon berry bushes, and the occasional privet hedge round out our repertoire. Each species gets technique adjusted accordingly — because what works for cedar can kill a lilac, and vice versa.

When to Schedule Hedge Trimming

For most properties in the North Bay and Powassan area, we recommend booking your hedge trimming in early June to secure a spot during the optimal trimming window. Our schedule fills up quickly between late June and mid-July — that's when the bulk of cedar hedge work happens. If you also have deciduous shrubs that need attention after spring bloom, we can coordinate both visits or handle everything in one trip depending on timing.

Commercial properties, condo complexes, and multi-unit buildings in Sturgeon Falls, West Ferris, and North Bay often book two visits per season — one in early summer for the primary shaping and a second in late August for a light cleanup trim on fast-growing species.

Trimming Schedule by Species

  • Cedar hedges — Mid-June through late July (optimal window)
  • Spring-blooming shrubs — Right after flowering (lilac, forsythia)
  • Summer-blooming shrubs — Early spring before bud break
  • Fast growers — May need a second trim in late August
Book in early June to secure your spot. The optimal cedar trimming window fills up fast — we schedule in booking order.

Shrub & Hedge Trimming FAQs

Got questions about hedge trimming? Here are the ones we hear most. Can't find your answer? Call us at (249) 506-9211.

When is the best time to trim cedar hedges in Northern Ontario?

The best time to trim cedar hedges in the North Bay and Powassan area is mid-June through late July, after the new growth has hardened off but well before fall. Trimming cedars after mid-August exposes fresh cuts to early frost and winter wind, which causes brown, dead patches known as winter burn. Martin Services schedules cedar hedge trimming during this optimal window to keep your hedges dense and green year after year. Call (249) 506-9211 to get on the schedule. Read the full answer →

How often should shrubs and hedges be trimmed in Northern Ontario?

Most shrubs and hedges in our Zone 4a/4b climate benefit from one to two trimmings per growing season. Fast-growing species like lilac and dogwood may need a second shaping in late summer. Cedar hedges typically need one well-timed trim per year. We assess each property individually because growth rates vary depending on sun exposure, soil conditions, and proximity to Lake Nipissing.

Do you trim large overgrown hedges or just maintenance trimming?

We handle both. Whether your cedar hedge just needs a light shaping or it hasn't been touched in years and needs a heavy renovation cut, our crew has the commercial equipment to do it right. For severely overgrown hedges, we often recommend a phased approach — cutting back hard in stages over two seasons rather than shocking the plant all at once. This is especially important for cedars, which don't regenerate well from old wood.

What types of shrubs and hedges do you trim in the North Bay area?

We trim all common Northern Ontario species including eastern white cedar (the most popular hedge in the region), lilac bushes, red and yellow dogwood, juniper, mugo pine, ninebark, potentilla, spirea, and ornamental shrubs like burning bush and cotoneaster. If it grows in Zone 4a/4b, we know how to shape it properly.

How much does hedge trimming cost in Powassan and North Bay?

Hedge trimming pricing depends on the length, height, and condition of your hedges, plus how many shrubs need attention. Most residential properties in the Powassan and North Bay area fall between $150 and $500 per visit. We include full cleanup — all clippings are removed, not left on your lawn.
